MARCH 2015

Dear Friend,

On February 21, we sent an Action Alert encouraging byway leaders and stakeholders to contact their members of Congress and request their support to clarify that Transportation Alternative Program funds may be used for byway projects.

Congress is holding hearings to seek comments and suggestions on transportation re-authorization.  Federal transportation funding will run out in May.  There is bi-partisan support for a long-term solution.  Now is the time to offer your ideas about what improvements should be made in the National Scenic Byways Program.  It is simpler for Congress to include your ideas now, rather than add them to a bill later in the legislative process.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing February 11 and another is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17 - see

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held hearings January 28 and

February 25 - see

On a lighter - yet also informative side - John Oliver devoted his March 1 "Last Week Tonight" show to infrastructure -

You don't need to travel to Washington.  Contact your Senators' and Representatives' local offices.  Call, write a letter, or email.  Should you prefer to schedule a meeting, your members likely will be home during their upcoming State Work Period, March 30-April 10.  We have additional information on our website

Best regards,

Rob Draper

The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition Wins
Excellence in Tourism Award for Visitor Guide

During the Mad About Tourism: Illinois Excellence in Tourism Awards Dinner held February 2 at the Palmer House in Chicago, the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition was honored to receive an Excellence in Tourism Award for their 2014 Visitor Guide!  Every year, the Illinois Governor's Conference on Tourism honors innovative tourism marketing initiatives that promote the outstanding destinations, attractions, and events throughout the State of Illinois.

The 2014 Illinois Lincoln Highway Visitor Guide was a new concept created to have more of a magazine look and feel to it. Through the combined efforts of the ILHC and Chicago & Beyond TDO offices, Trittenhaus Design in Sycamore, photography by Steven Peterson, help from our partners, and so many more, we were able to produce this wonderful guide!
