Fall is fantastic for exploring the nation's scenic byways. The Rocky Mountain quaking aspen fall colors are among the most vivid reminders of the beauty of this country. While enjoying your drive, also celebrate that 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the National Scenic Byways Program created through the federal Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991.
Colorado offers an outstanding collection of 26 Colorado Scenic and Historic Byways, including 11 America's Byways®, 2 All-American Roads, 10 National Forest Scenic Byways, and 2 Bureau of Land Management National Back Country Byways. America's Byways® is the umbrella term used for the national collection of 150 distinct and diverse roads designated by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. 

In this 25th anniversary year, Colorado Byways is collaborating with MyScenicDrives to provide more information for travelers. The website features a road trip planner and much more. Another opportunity to pre-plan your drive is found at theGreat Outdoors USA website. Featured stops and routes embrace many scenic drives.
Since the earliest days of the automobile, driving for pleasure has always been one of America's most popular outdoor recreational pursuits. Today the re-emergence of alternative travel via bicycling, boat, hiking and other means enthrall visitors for an up close and personal connection with nature. How to get the best FB hits
 
When is the best time to post on Facebook?
  
The truth is that there is no answer that works for everyone, BUT...
  
Knowing your page's unique audience will help you decide when you should be posting, so pay attention to your page Insights data (available only to Page Administrators.) Here are two tips to help you figure things out:
  
1)  On the left side of your Insights page, click on "Posts" and look at the daily chart at the top to see which days and at what times the majority of your Page followers are active on Facebook. Mouse over each day of the week - the data is different for each one. Weekends matter, too.
  
According to Facebook, only posting at your peak traffic times may actually hurt your reach; you'll be competing with everyone else posting at that time. You might want to publish when things are less active and your post has a better chance of being seen. Experiment to see how that works for you.
  
2)  Get to know your audience - this is SO important! In your Page Insights, click on People on the left side and look at your page follower demographics. Note follower ages and locations; that helps you decide when to post, too. Pay attention to time zones. Schedule occasional posts for when you may be asleep, but Page followers are active.
  
Spend some time looking at all the tabs on your Page's Insights section. The more you know about your Page followers, the better you can decide on the best times to publish and connect with them.

Newly installed A1A Coastal  Byway Wayfinding Signs

As you get on the road to explore with newly planned itineraries, know that byway leaders across America plan to make your travels informative, enjoyable and authentic experiences. Along theA1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Bywayin Florida you will now find beautifully designed wayfinding signs to direct you to the nearest destination of interest along the 72 mile corridor. The signage project, commenced in 2009, was just recently completed with intense collaboration between multiple counties, municipalities and  byway community organizations. Look for the distinctive blue signs with the A1A Spoonbill logo to know you are traveling a very special roadway.

A similar feat has also been accomplished in Woodbine, New Jersey as posted by theMay County Herald. The New Jersey Department of Transportation completed installation of the scenic byway signage along the 130 mile state Pine Barrens Byway, which runs through the Borough of Woodbine. As a state byway, Pine Barrens aspires to be included in the America's Byways collection.

Funding was obtained through national grants submitted in 2012 to fabricate and install all of the wayfinding identification signs along the byways. The multi-year sign projects undertake design, collaboration and installation of fabricated signs.

Attracting Visitors: Building Byway Itineraries

The towns and attractions along a scenic byway or heritage highway are the building blocks for wonderful experiences, but how can you make sure that visitors know all of their options? 
  
You could just give them a "laundry list" of everything along the byway, but it's much more effective to build at least a few custom itineraries. 
  
Families with young children may want to see different things than what would excite a history and culture enthusiast, or a nature lover. Byway itineraries play a special role for international visitors, too, as they make travel plans to try to see the best of what our country can offer. 
  
This NSBF (National Scenic Byway Foundation) webinar will show you how to create compelling byway itineraries, ensure that visitors can find them, and help you see how your itineraries fit into international marketing opportunities like the annual IPW conference and the"Come Closer to America"marketing website.

Around the Nation - Fantastic Fall
1854 Rowan Courthouse Museum

  

Scenic America and Scenic North Carolina are partnering in presenting their annual Affiliates conference and symposium onFriday, October 7, 2016. The symposium will be in the historic town of Salisbury at the 1854Rowan Courthouse Museum.
The theme of this year's conference is "Protecting Scenic Beauty and Community Character," inspired by key issues in Scenic America's new white paper Taking the Long View: A Proposal for Realizing America the Beautiful.

Thedraft agendahighlights a variety of speakers and topics including: placemaking as a key component of economic development, the importance of gateway roads, and a session on sign control in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling in Reed v. Town of Gilbert.

The symposium registration fee of $75 includes a light breakfast and buffet luncheon. An additional $20 provides admission to an evening reception at the N.C. Transportation Museum.  All registration options can be found atwww.scenic.org/salisbury.
